- 5-HTP Plus Formula capsules contain 75 mg of natural L-5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) extracted from seeds of the Griffonia simplicifolia 5-HTP helps to promote healthy mood balance.
Serotonin, an important brain neurotransmitter, is key in the regulation of mood.
- Serotonin is unable to cross the blood-brain barrier and is therefore synthesized in the brain.
- Tryptophan, an essential amino acid, is a precursor for the synthesis of serotonin. Tryptophan crosses the blood-brain barrier and is converted to L-5-hydroxytryptophan, which in turn is converted into serotonin.
- As a metabolic amino acid intermediate in the conversion of tryptophan into serotonin, 5-HTP can also serve as a precursor of serotonin. 5-HTP crosses into the brain more readily than tryptophan as it does so without competition for uptake. 5-HTP exerts its beneficiary effects to promote healthy mood balance by increasing serotonin production, which in turn decreases excitatory hormones in the brain including dopamine and noradrenaline.
- The amino acids tyrosine and glutamine help to support additional adrenal gland and mood neurotransmitters.
- Tyrosine is the precursor to the adrenal hormones epinephrine and norepinephrine as well as dopamine and the thyroid hormone thyroxine. Dopamine may promote deep thinking and improve memory while thyroxine helps metabolism. Melanin, the skin and hair pigment is also derived from this amino acid.
- Glutamine helps to support mood and increase mental alertness.

Recommended Use
Adults 19+: Take 1 capsule 1-3 times daily with food or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. To minimize the risk of gastrointestinal side effects, start dosing at 1 capsule twice per day and slowly increase to 1 capsule thrice daily. Use for a minimum of 1 week to see beneficial effects. Consult your healthcare practitioner for use beyond 1 year.

Contraindications
Do not use if you are hypersensitive or allergic to any of the ingredients. Do not use if you have scleroderma.
Caution
Consult a health care practitioner prior to use if you are taking any medications (especially carbidopa or drugs/supplements with serotonergic activity; these may include, but are not limited to, L-tryptophan, S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe), St. John's wort, antidepressants, pain killers, over the counter cough and cold medication containing dextromethorphan, anti-nausea medication and anti-migraine medication) or if you have any pre-existing condition or symptoms including but not limited to if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, on a low protein diet. Discontinue 2 weeks prior to any scheduled surgery.
Side Effect Risks
Discontinue use and consult a healthcare practitioner if symptoms persist, worsen or you develop any reactions which may include allergy or intolerance, signs of weakness, oral ulcers, abdominal pain accompanied by severe muscle pain, skin changes, drowsiness, and or digestive symptoms (nausea, vomiting, or diarrhoea). Exercise caution if operating heavy machinery, driving a motor vehicle or involved in activities requiring mental alertness. Keep out of reach of children. Sealed for your protection.
